At Winsor Wax Melt Co., the wax we choose matters just as much as the fragrance. That’s why we use soy wax in our wax melts rather than choosing paraffin as our base. Both can make beautifully scented products, but their origins and characteristics are different. Here’s how they compare and why soy is the right fit for Winsor.
What is soy wax?
Soy wax is a plant-derived wax made from processed soybean oil. Soybeans can be grown again each season, making soy a renewable feedstock. We like working with a plant-based wax as the foundation of our fragranced melts.
What is paraffin wax?
Paraffin wax is made from materials obtained during petroleum refining. It is widely used in candles and wax melts because it is versatile and can carry fragrance well. However, petroleum is a finite fossil resource, which is one reason we prefer soy as our wax base.
Soy wax melts vs paraffin wax melts: what’s the difference?
Where the wax comes from
This is the clearest distinction: soy wax comes from soybean oil, while paraffin comes from petroleum. Choosing a renewable raw material is important to us, although the wider environmental impact also depends on how soy is grown, processed and transported. We don’t claim that every soy wax product is automatically more sustainable in every respect.
Melting and fragrance
Soy wax is popular for its soft texture and melting characteristics. Both soy and paraffin can release lovely fragrance when used in a suitable warmer. How strong a fragrance smells, and how long you notice it, depend on the full recipe, fragrance oil, amount used, warmer temperature and room conditions. Wax type alone doesn’t guarantee a stronger or longer-lasting scent.
What about soot and air quality?
It’s worth distinguishing wax melts from candles. A wax melt is warmed rather than burned as a fuel, so comparisons about the soot produced by burning soy or paraffin candles do not directly apply. Fragranced wax melts of either type still release fragrance compounds into the air. We don’t describe soy wax melts as toxin-free or promise that they are safer than every paraffin alternative.
Why Winsor chooses soy wax
We choose soy wax because we prefer a plant-derived base and because it suits the kind of wax melts we want to offer: carefully made home fragrance products with a wide choice of scents. For us, it’s a considered materials choice rather than a claim that paraffin cannot make a good wax melt.
Whether you enjoy fresh, fruity, floral or warm fragrances, the most important thing is finding a scent that you love. You can browse our soy wax melts, try our Lavender Wax Melts, or explore several fragrances with a Nature’s Selection Wax Melts.
How to get the best from your wax melts
Use only a suitable wax warmer and follow its instructions. Never leave it operating unattended, and keep warm wax and the warmer away from children, pets and flammable items. Read our guide to using wax melts for practical advice, or see our room-by-room fragrance guide if you’re not sure which scent to try next.
