How to Clean a Wax Warmer Safely

White Ceramic Owl Wax Warmer

A wax warmer is a lovely way to enjoy fragrance at home, but sooner or later the scent will fade and you will want to change the wax. The good news is that cleaning a wax warmer is usually straightforward, provided you follow the manufacturer’s instructions and take care around hot wax.

When should you change a wax melt?

Wax melts do not burn away like a candle. The wax remains in the dish, even after much of its fragrance has been released. If you can still smell the wax when the warmer is operating, there may be no need to change it yet.

When the fragrance becomes noticeably faint, it is time to remove the used wax and start again. If you are ready for a fresh scent, you could try our Lavender Wax Melts. Avoid adding layer after layer of new wax: an overfilled dish can spill.

Method 1: Let the wax cool and remove it

  1. Switch off your electric warmer, or extinguish the tealight, and allow the wax to cool completely.
  2. If your dish and its manufacturer allow it, gently loosen the solid wax from the dish. Do not force it.
  3. Lift out the wax and dispose of it with household waste in line with local guidance.
  4. Wipe the dish with a soft cloth, following the warmer’s care instructions.

Some ceramic dishes release cooled wax easily, while others do not. Never chip at a delicate glaze with a knife or metal tool.

Method 2: Absorb softened wax

If the wax will not come out in one piece, the warmer’s own instructions may permit warming it just enough to soften it, then carefully absorbing it with cotton wool or kitchen paper. Do not put your fingers into hot wax, and do not handle the dish until it is safe to touch. Never leave a warmer unattended during this process.

When the remaining wax has been removed and the dish is cool, wipe away residue with a soft cloth. Avoid harsh cleaners or abrasives unless the manufacturer expressly approves them.

What should you avoid?

  • Do not pour wax down the sink. It can solidify in pipes and cause blockages.
  • Do not put water into hot wax. Water and wax do not mix, and splashing is hazardous.
  • Do not use metal scrapers or sharp tools. These may damage the dish.
  • Do not use the freezer or immerse electrical parts in water unless the manufacturer specifically advises that method.
  • Do not overfill the dish when replacing the wax.

Keeping your warmer in good condition

Place your warmer on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from draughts, curtains, children and pets. Use only the recommended wax quantity and operate the warmer for the periods advised by its manufacturer. Check for cracks or damage before use.
